“These days vampires gravitated toward particle accelerators, projects to decode the genome, and molecular biology. Despite the manuscript, despite the fact that my hands contained enough voltage to run a microwave, and despite the photograph, as long as I was connected to him, I was safe.” At last it snapped to its full length, anchoring me to a vampire. The chain continued to drop, to an unfathomable depth where there was nothing but darkness and Matthew. My hands, which had been balled up and pressed against his chest, unfurled with it. It freed itself, link by link, from where it had rested, unobserved, waiting for him.

“Somewhere in the center of my soul, a rusty chain began to unwind. It waited, quietly, for people to return to it when they found the science wanting.” “I saw the logic that they used, and the death of a thousand cuts as experimental scientists slowly chipped away at the belief that the world was an inexplicably powerful, magical place. “As fast as I can tell there are only two emotions that keep the world spinning year after year…One is fear. “Just because something seems impossible doesn’t make it untrue,” “In this room we understand why this war might be fought…it’s about our common belief that no one has the right to tell two creatures that they cannot love each other–no matter what their species.”

Awesome read – VERY original mythology and a sweet, tender love story. In this world, there are 4 kinds of creatures: daemons (best described as “serial killers and rock stars”), vampires (scientifically explained kind, not undead), witches (who varying abilities to control natural elements), and humans. In season 3, Diana and Matthew must try to make scientific breakthroughs into a terrible disease that affects their own family, deal with huge loss, new beginnings, and old foes, as their journey takes them towards a thrilling and incendiary conclusion. The best way I can think to describe this is: PNR meets DaVinci Code… taking the best of both worlds. Season 2 takes them back to the 16th century, crossing paths with historical figures Diana thought she could only dream of meeting, as she comes into her own incredible power. Across three distinctive and gripping seasons, Diana and Matthew's quest to solve the mystery of the book and their own long-prophesied connection to it throws them into the path of dangerous enemies. But when she unexpectedly calls up an ancient, betwitched manuscript from Oxford's Bodleian Library, she finds herself thrown into the heart of a dangerous mystery – and into the path of the enigmatic geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont. Brilliant historian Diana Bishop is a witch denying her own heritage. Adapted from Deborah Harkness' best-selling trilogy of novels, A DISCOVER OF WITCHES is a bold and romantic thriller that uncovers a secret underworld of vampires, witches and daemons hiding in plain sight for fear of persecution by humans.
